Thank you Larry. Well, this is the fun part of participating in a new field: to try and predict, and contribute to, the Future.

We'll see what unexpected combinations we see with physical + mental exercise!

Enjoy the weekend

Hi Alvaro

I enjoyed your look into the Crystal Ball of what form brain health programs will assume in the future. I see potential synergies of physical exercise followed by "brain training" sessions.

Great article!

Thank you, lpalmer. can you be a bit more specific on what you mean?

would you like us to elaborate on "physical exercise, balanced diet, stress management (stress has been shown to actually kill neurons and reduce the rate of creation of new ones) and overall mental stimulation and lifelong learning." or you do mean other aspects?

Thanks!

Just a reminder: brain growth/development requires different action/technique than brain operation/efficiency. These are totally different functions.

Good article.

Thank you, Jenny and Brian.

Brian, indeed, time to trailblaze! I encourage you to look not only into meditation, but also a variety of software and biofeedback programs, to provide a more complete "mental workout", tailored to the needs of different individuals.

Let us know how it goes!

What a terrific article. As the Fitness Director of a Los Angeles-based health club, and as a veteran meditator, I have long been fascinated with the possibility of integrating physical and mental fitness. Of course, the Buddhists and yogis have been doing this for thousands of years. Now it's time to tailor it to the "western mind"! I am currently working on a program to integrate both into a 60 minute personal training session using scientific modalities. The fitness side is easy - the brain portion is more challenging for all the reasons Alvaro illuminated. Time to trailblaze!

Everyone to exercise cognitive skills as needed, both improving strengths and widening bottlenecks that prevent overall progress. Different programs will flex different mental muscles much as different machines at a gym build different muscle groups.

We can grow older but our brain need not grow weaker. Conversely, it should be sharper and wiser.
